Mermaid Rock

Eliza is never really bored. That's not to say she is always enthusiastic about what the rest of us have going on, or that she is actively involved in any externally-imposed itineraries. Because that would be untrue. Whenever she is not inspired by what we are doing, she goes off - sometimes with a sister or friend, sometimes on her own - and occupies herself.

The last time we went down to be with our extended family, we spent some time at the local soccer field, playing frisbee and soccer and softball, and general running around out-of-doors. Eliza sampled the activities to be had, and then decided to do something else.

This is a mermaid she made using rocks from the gravel parking lot.

The same mermaid, singing about something..

But wait! Mermaids don't hang out on wood benches! They swim in lovely blue water. But where to find something blue at the soccer fields...

Here is a mermaid, swimming in the deep blue sea, represented here by the bottom of my purse.

Isn't it perfect? Don't you wish you had thought of it, too? I am amazed at her creativity, and how unfettered she is by convention and paradigms. She effortlessly sees things I never even knew were there.

This is strangely familiar! Two of my daughters spent the entire morning washing, drying, and coloring rocks (with chalk) on the front porch today. Each rock has his own personality, and they all attend a rock school in the driveway.

Diana's favorite security object is a smooth, flat oval rock, which she has carefully decorated with crayon. She can't sleep without it.

Why do we even buy toys?
